About the project

The link between the culture of ancient Egypt and sustainability and recycling in modern societies is an outstanding example in human history. Ancient Egypt’s long period of prosperity along the Nile River is proof that people can survive in harsh conditions if they creatively adapt to their environment and try to survive by adapting their own activities to the environment and many of their practices and traditions were based on the principles of sustainability and recycling.

The ancient Egyptians, for example, were particularly advanced in agriculture, and regularly took advantage of the Nile floods to increase crop yields. During the floods, farmers flooded the fields to leave behind fertile silt, which resulted in rich soil formation. In addition, ancient Egyptians relied heavily on sustainability in animal husbandry by using animal manure to fertilise fields.

Ancient Egyptians also considered recycling important. For example, they made paper from the papyrus plant and recycled materials used in the textile industry. However, the world has changed considerably since ancient Egypt and modern society has lost touch with sustainability and recycling in many areas.

Studying the connections between ancient Egyptian culture and modern sustainability provides an opportunity to learn to apply ancient wisdom and practices to today’s sustainability challenges. The example of the ancient Egyptians reminds us that the sustainable use and recycling of nature’s resources are key to long-term survival and prosperity.

In addition, modern technology and science allow us to improve upon ancient Egyptian practices and find new, more efficient ways of sustainability and recycling. Understanding the connections between ancient culture and the modern world can help create a more sustainable future for generations to come.
